Tomb Raider: Underworld includes a number of different characters, a lot that may be recognizable to fans of the series from the beginning. Here are some short biographies of the major characters in the game.

Amanda Evert

Amanda Evert

Once Lara Croft's best friend, the metaphysicist fascinated by mysticism always dreamed of rediscovering forgotten truths about mystical knowledge driven out of the world by modern science. During a past expedition with university colleagues, she was stuck beneath rocks while both she and Lara tried to flee a flooding tomb. Lara managed to escape, but Amanda was left behind and developed a huge grudge against her former friend. After finding Jacqueline Natla, Amanda had her own particular library of knowledge she had longed for, and has been determined to get to Avalon, the Celtic paradise, since then.

Jacqueline Natla

Jacqueline Natla was the owner and CEO of Natla Technologies, but the once Atlantean Queen had her true identity exposed after sending Lara Croft after the Scion of Atlantis. Jacqueline Natla maimed her own brother, and betrayed the Sacred Order of the Three rulers of lost continent Atlantis in her quest for the means to bring the Seventh Age upon mankind. The immortal goddess was trapped under one of the last remnants of Atlantis, but was located and kept prisoner by Amanda Evert in subsequent years. Just like she had made a puppet out of Lara, she is now in control of an unaware Amanda, to reach her personal goals.

Alister Fletcher

Alister Fletcher

Alister Fletcher is Lara's research assistant and a repository for a fantastic array of detailed historical information. He confines his researches to libraries and museums, however, concentrating on understanding and explaining what has already been found, as opposed to Lara's search for new artifacts. He's a 15th-year doctoral student at Oxford and hasn't received his doctorate because his belief that everything is connected to everything else makes it impossible for him to draw the boundaries required to finish his dissertation.

Zip

Zip is Lara's right hand man and tech expert. Getting in touch with Lara Croft wherever she is, he is able to instantly provide her with a wealth of information, by accessing various electronic reference resources, and other online knowledge databases. In his spare time, he tinkers around with electronics, developing new technology that might prove useful to Ms. Croft in the field. In addition to being a savvy purveyor of all things "geeky", Zip is also a distinguished chef, and has worked in some of the best kitchens in northern Europe.

Winston Smith

Winston Smith

Winston's family has been with the Crofts for generations, and he has been the family butler since he was honourably discharged from the military in his late-twenties; just as his father before him. He moved into Croft Manor to stay as the only live-in staff when his wife died, before Lara was born. He tends to all Lara's household needs, going far beyond the duties of a traditional butler, given Lara's unusal lifestyle and pursuits, but he has never disappointed her. His loyalty to Lara, her parents, and Croft Manor is beyond question.

Richard Croft

Lord Richard Croft, Lara's father, was tutored at Eton in Anthropology and Archaeology. With the considerable wealth of the Croft family behind him, Richard spent his younger years embarking on innumerable expeditions to historical sites worldwide, in an effort to support his unconventional hypothesis of a base culture that pre-dated known history. Richard and his wife, Amelia, had Lara only a year after marrying. Nine years later, after Amelia disappeared in a plane crash, Richard sank further and further into obsession, consumed with discovering what had become of her. A few years later, he himself died while on a dig in Cambodia.

Amelia Croft

Lady Amelia Croft mysteriously disappeared in the Himalayas after a trip with Lara Croft. Only she and her daughter survived the plane crash, and looking for refuge both of them came across an ancient temple, hosting a mysterious stone dais. Unaware of its danger, 9 year old Lara Croft touched a sword in a stone and activated a strange portal which voices came from. Amelia pushed Lara back to keep her safe and confronted the mysterious voices, who demanded she pull out the sword before it would explode. After pulling out the sword, Amelia vanished, and despite her husband's constant efforts, no one had any clue of her whereabouts, until Amanda Evert revealed to Lara Croft that she had warped to Avalon.
